ABOUT PROBAC BIOLOGICALS
INFORMATION PAGE
PROBAC Biologicals uses bacteria to clean. While this may sound a bit odd, once we rationalise this, it will make perfect sense.
Since we invented 'soap', we have made use of chemicals to 'lift and shift' dirt into the environment, followed by the chemicals used; - with the result being an overload of dirt and chemical pollution in wastewater and natural ecosystems, as well human health issues from chemical use in the home and business. Without a doubt, we have been poisoning our planet and our families with synthetic and toxic chemical compounds over the past 100 years.
Hundreds of research papers have been published documenting the results of pollution that cause the extinction of species on a daily basis, acidification and dead zones in rivers and oceans where nothing lives, and the increased prevalence of cancers and endocrine disruption in humans and animals, pointing directly at the every-day chemicals that we use in our homes and industry.
PROBAC goes right through the problem and it is from nature that we have found the solution. We have harnessed the same beneficial bacteria that nature uses to biodegrade organic waste, and we have learned how to grow them in massive concentrations, placing them exactly where they are needed - on surfaces in our homes and hospitals, in domestic and industrial waste systems, and even our laundry and dishes; - allowing us to bring the whole natural cleaning process forward, biodegrading our own dirt in our homes in the process of cleaning, eliminating chemicals entirely from the whole equation. By targeting these high concentrations of good bacteria exactly where they are needed, we achieve a force-multiplier effect of hyper-accelerated biodegradation - basically cleaning exactly the way nature does, but just a million or so times faster. MAKES SENSE doesn't it? Well, this is the main compelling reason to use this fantastic technology
- IT MAKES BLOODY SENSE to clean exactly the way nature does - with some added scientific ingenuity of course.
The second compelling reason to use PROBAC is that it cleans brilliantly. PROBAC achieves microscopic deep cleaning, biodegrading every trace element of organic waste, with the added benefit of residual cleaning by which surfaces remain cleaner for longer due to the sustained cleaning activity of the probiotics, long after the actual cleaning process has taken place. PROBAC also displaces and banishes unwanted bacteria by 'occupying the field', removing their food source and hiding places (biofilm), and otherwise outcompeting against unwanted bacteria in a winner-takes-all scenario particular to bacterial micro-organisms (see Vaus's Law). Say goodbye to those indiscriminate disinfectants once and for all. Click here for more about PROBAC versus disinfectants.
Besides exceptional cleaning properties, PROBAC biologicals also deals with bad odours in a unique and distinctive way. PROBAC bacteria have been specifically selected for their by-product which is odorless carbon dioxide and they replace those bacteria which produce a bad smell as their by-product. The end result is no bad smells and a very pleasant home and business environment; - especially kitchen drains, carpeting and bathrooms.
The beneficial bacteria in PROBAC Biologicals are categorised as Class 1 micro-organisms and cannot harm any living creature. They can only do the job of biodegrading dead organic matter, precicely the way they exist and function in nature.
Important distinction: PROBAC Biologicals is not another biodegradable chemical, and is not deserving either of the categorisation 'Environmentally friendly'. PROBAC uniquely 'does the work of biodegrading' as its active function, and is uniquely "GOOD" for the environment. Read more about 'Green cleaning myths' here.
Lastly, and equally as compelling as 'making sense' and efficacy in cleaning; - PROBAC...DOESN'T COST THE EARTH. By this we mean that PROBAC is both GOOD for the planet and human health, and also GOOD for your pocket.
For good reason, PROBAC technology is now being widely acknowledged in scientific circles as the world's most advanced cleaning product from the perspectives of environmental and human health.
Creating a world in which our children can live!
The story behind PROBAC Biologicals started well over a decade ago as a controversial whisper –
‘Using bacteria to clean’.
When we first realised that there were so many more people who were thinking about the environment and the cleaning products they were using, we saw an opportunity to make a real and meaningful contribution. We also saw an opportunity to turn it into a conversation.
Everyone thought we were mad, especially the notoriously difficult chemical industry that we were going up against, who are mostly invested in combating all bacteria as a function of cleaning.
PROBAC persevered and has since become a well established retail and commercial brand on the back of three basic principles:
1. PROBAC technology makes sense(mimics natural process of biodegradation)
2. PROBACcleans brilliantly(sustained residual deep cleaning)
3. PROBAC“DOESN’T COST THE EARTH®”(GOOD for the planet and your pocket)
PROBAC credibility for innovation in probiotic cleaning is now securely entrenchedand leading to compounded growth with new players entering the market across all sectors.
Internationally, PROBAC cleaning technology is now being widely considered inscientific circles as the world’s most advanced. Not just another environmentally friendly cleaning chemical, but a distinctive novel technology shift,-one that is widely deemed to besupremely good and healthy for people, animalsand our beleaguered environment.
PROBAC was the first retail line of products that has been developed specifically to nurture the good bacteria on surfaces in our homes and businesses, which also primarily serveas the actual cleaning agent, and as a replacement for traditional harsh cleaning chemicals.
The core product, the core technology, is based around a group of harmless bacteria that you will find in nature –the same that biodegrade our dirt and waste, and even chemicals, which we flush into the wastewater stream, rivers and oceans.
Every time we use a chemical based detergent or disinfectant, (besides the negative impact on human health and the environment), we also disrupt the healthy balance, or sustainable microbial stability,by killing the good bacteria that normally competes against the bad bacteria and keeps them suppressed.
PROBAC simply brings the process of biodegradation forward, -a concentrated ‘force multiplier’, -allowing us to do the work of nature in our homes and businesses. PROBAC biodegradesour own dirt and waste ‘in the process of cleaning’–eliminating those nasty chemicals from the whole equation as well.
Makes sense, doesn’t it? This is purely cleaning the way nature intended.
We believe that homes and even hospitals, as well as people and animals are far healthier under conditions of sustainable probiotic stability. PROBAC achieves this through the purposeful use of good bacteria for cleaning, odour control and eradication of unwanted harmful bacteria.
We really need to rethink what ‘clean’ means. For a long time we have believed that clean is ‘sterile’, and what we are learning, and what the vast majority of us have acknowledged, is that sterile is not healthy. Not healthy for our family and pets and not healthy for the food we eat, and not healthy for our natural environment.
There is something magical about PROBAC. There is something about the way it makes perfect sense to clean with a system designed by Mother Nature -a perfectly natural symbiosis-the sought after harmonious relationship between our environment and the human element.
We want people to use good bacteria in their homes and businesses –embracing the notion of reconnecting with nature, while enjoying a superior cleaning function. We know we are challenging people and conventional mind-sets, but for us it is a challenge well worth taking on.
We don’t view ourselves as an environmental cleaning products company, we view ourselves as a people and environment health company, -and there is a reason for that –because we fundamentally believe that there is no more natural method of cleaning and living a healthier life,in harmony with Mother Nature.

Ignorance, as they say, is bliss – except when it involves “green” practices that are merely harming the environment in a different way, or having no effect at all. As the popularity of “eco-friendly” products continues to rise, manufactures and distributors are attempting to differentiate their products through the use of inaccurate statements, skewed facts and downright myths. In this instance, knowledge truly is power – especially when it comes to reading between the marketing material lines to determine whether or not green cleaning products are truly green.
Usually, companies that sell “green” cleaning products position these items within one of four categories; biodegradable products, enzymatic products, bacterial products (biological), or essential microorganism products (microbes and their metabolites).
While biodegradable cleaning chemicals sound like a perfect solution, the standard measure of their biodegradability can only be achieved in the laboratory where perfect conditions are supplied. These perfect conditions are pH neutrality and sufficient supply of nutrients and beneficial bacteria (that cause the biodegradation event). The obvious problem with this is that these perfect conditions are rarely, if ever, available in the variable environments that these chemicals are flushed into. Therefore ‘biodegradable’ chemicals are certainly far from the ideal that they are marketed to be.
Bacterial products, on the other hand, utilise single celled organisms that have the ability to reproduce by simple cellular division. When using the correct bacteria, nutrients in the environment are recycled, as organic matter is broken down into simple compounds such as carbon dioxide and water. When using massive concentrations of the correct bacteria, hyper-accelerated biodegradation of soils is achievable in the process of cleaning, bypassing the need for chemical lift and shifting of soils into the environment, accompanied by the chemicals used. These are the only products that can naturally penetrate the unwanted bacteria’s biofilm, which forms a protective layer against other chemical cleaners.
Enzymes, which are produced by bacteria, are proteins that act as catalysts, thereby accelerating the rate of reaction with a substrate. Enzymes are substrate specific, meaning that different enzymes can be put into particular products in order to clean distinctive kinds of dirt. It is important to note that enzymes are not living things. Therefore they cannot adapt to different conditions. In contrast, bacteria are living organisms that adapt to their environment and produce specific enzymes that break down organic matter, such as fats, oils, cellulose, xylan, proteins and starches. As a result of this, and the short life-span of an enzyme, living bacteria is preferred in products, as it constantly produces fresh enzymes. However, some cleaning products can be “boosted” by adding a certain amount of prepared enzymes to the product to begin degrading the organic matter. While these enzymes die out, the bacteria present reproduce, creating more enzymes to continue the cleaning process.
Essential microbes, or Effective Microorganisms (EM® ) is a brand name referring to a family of microbial-based products using a technology developed by Japanese scientist, Dr Teruo Higa. The main product, EM·1®, is a liquid bacterial product comprising three groups of microbes: Yeast, Photosynthetic Bacteria, and Lactic Acid Bacteria. EM·1® works together with local and native beneficial microbes, creating a synergy among microorganisms and larger forms of life including; insects, worms, pets, livestock, and people. All the formulations and intellectual property are owned and managed by EM Research Organization in Okinawa, Japan (EMRO). However, when claiming “green” product status, it is highly likely that EM is non-functional as a cleaning agent, due to the fact that no enzymes are release to degrade the organic soil. As such, cleaning is achieved through the chemical based surfactants at work, which are not considered eco-friendly.
It is clear that a carefully calculated combination of bacterial strains (considered beneficial microorganisms) and added enzymes, each selected for its efficiency at degrading certain waste materials, is the winning formula in green cleaning. When used correctly, these products are completely safe and effectively tackle the wide variety of compounds found on surfaces and waste systems.
The Brand PROBAC is wholly owned by South African company Soft Chemical Laboratories, based in Durban, South Africa.
The company hereby attests and confirms that no animal testing is undertaken whatsoever by Soft Chemical Laboratories.
However, various components that are blended to produce the various final products that make up the PROBAC product range have previously undergone animal testing to ensure safety to animals and humans and the environment. This testing was undertaken by the producers of the raw materials in the R&D phase, and is a legal requirement to ensure safety and allow for use in the country of origin as well as for commercial export, thereby satisfying international shipping regulations. This was especially relevant in the importing of the main active ingredients, which is the live cultures of micro-organisms. These have been categorised as Class 1 Micro-organisms, safe for international export and import, without which this brilliant technology would be unavailable globally.
In all the raw materials used to produce the final PROBAC product, we have sought and acquired assurances from the relevant producers that there is no further ongoing animal testing on the materials used.
We are very mindful of the issues around animal testing and the company and its owners are proponents of anti-animal testing, most vigorously in the case of vanity and cosmetic products. In the case of PROBAC, which is the culmination of a highly scientific endeavour, the company and its owners acknowledge, and would like the general consumer and anti-animal testing community to recognise, - that the prevalence and support of PROBAC technology and a cleaning product and lifestyle choice has the potential to save the planet from pervasive chemical pollution of natural environments, and thereby save threatened species from extinction. Additionally, recent testing of this technology in hospitals – as per two papers published in Plos 1 and the Journal of Microbiology – prove reduction of prevalence of hospital acquired infections (MRSA) by 85%, compared to traditional disinfection cleaning applications.
